Haydn Violin Concertos Mendelssohn Octet

Gil Shaham and Sejongs’ association extends back over ten years. Gil says performing the Mendelssohn Octet with Sejong is ‘like playing basketball with seven Michael Jordans as each musician is a staggering soloist in their own right’. Sejong is renowned for its cohesiveness and refreshing musical style and under Gil Shaham’s direction give this repertoire a sense of real intimacy, creating a magical intensity and sense of engagement. Shaham and Sejong have toured this repertoire extensively before the release of the recording and as the concert review in the Santa Barbara Independent noted – ‘Shaham manages to combine extraordinary virtuosity with uncommon restraint … The majestic sweep of the augmented quartet form was given full rein … two powerful forces in the service of a higher cause.’
